1st Place - "Blu" | |
 |
 | | Meet Blu, just one more wonderful ambassador for American Brittany Rescue (ABR) (www.americanbrittanyrescue.org). Blu and I wish to congratulate Sissy and Gilbert, fellow ABR dogs, for making the final round with him!

Blu came into my life two and a half years ago. He had been abandoned on a farm and was fortunate the farmer recognized him as a Brittany. Instead of sending him to the shelter, the farmer tracked down rescue where he found his way into my heart.

|
 |

I had lost my other Brittany just a few months prior and didn't really feel ready for another dog. But I made the mistake of looking on the website just to see what was out there. Barney, as he was known in rescue, was presented as a wonderfully well behaved dog who was bigger than your average Britt. There seemed to be nothing negative about this dog. There was no picture to fall in love with, just the words and between the lines was the message "this is your dog." I am the luckiest person in the world to have been allowed to adopt Blu.

Blu is pretty darn lucky himself. He spends most of his time with me as a service dog. But life isn't all work and no play. Blu likes his many toys, the beach, the dog park, walks downtown, the cat, and all his dog friends. His favorite activity is swimming and kayaking on Lake Natomas. All around, he's just an awesome dog.

| 2nd Place - "Rugby"

 | |

I got Rugby in January of 2007 as a hospice foster. Rugby's owner died and the family didn't want to take care of an old, sick dog, so they called GRRI-NJ to sign Rugby over to the rescue.

Rugby was 13 years old and had endstage kidney failure and a big tumor in his scrotum, besides other minor health problems He was a wonderful boy and loved being pampered and being part of my pack. It was not an easy foster because his appetite was changing on a daily basis. Everyday I had to figure out what he was in the mood for. (With chronic kidney failure the appetite changes from one day to another.) I could always entice him with his favorite-- blueberry muffins. He absolutely loved those, he preferred them to any kind of food I tried to feed him.

|
|
With the coming months he got weaker and slowed down, but he never really lost his spunk until about a week before he passed. He had something about him that I will never forget and he really tugged on my heartstrings. We still miss him so very much and I wish more people would do hospice fostering. Yes, it is very hard because we know the outcome, but there is nothing more rewarding than to make an older and sick dogs' live more comfortable for the last few months. We also wanted to thank the many people that voted for Rugby and helped him to be one of the winners.

3rd Place - "Penny"

 | |
My husband and I adopted Penny from Northern CA Golden Retriever Rescue in May 2007; she was an owner surrender. We don't know much about the first 8 years of her life but guess that she was named for the beautiful color of her coat. We kept the name 'Penny', though her nickname quickly became 'Shadow'. The nickname is rarely used today since she is no longer my constant shadow.

She enjoys going on walks, chasing squirrels, swimming (if there are ducks to chase), and spending time with her family which includes a Golden Retriever "sister" and two cockatiels. She recently became a Furry Friend (pet assisted therapy organization) and visits an assisted living and Alzheimer's facility twice a month.

Penny will be 10 years old on August 7, 2008.
